Maitland Street Interiors was founded by Interior Decorator + Stylist Sarah Elshaug, who has dedicated the last few years to chasing her dream of creating beautifully resolved interiors that are uplifting and enduring.
As a former marketer, event & project manager, Sarah’s journey into interiors began after leaving behind an established career to chase her passion for interiors and achieve a more rewarding work life balance whilst raising two young daughters. Having managed marketing campaigns for some pretty fun and well known brands such as Corona and Yoplait over a 10 year career with both Fosters and Lion, Sarah is now charging head long into interior design by creating beautifully resolved spaces that truly impact the way people inhabit their homes everyday. After all life is too short not to look forward to that uplifting feeling when you open the door each day and step inside the home you always dreamed of truly enjoying.
Sarah returned to study and completed a Certificate IV in Interior Decoration at RMIT in 2015. The juggle of study, family life and no income for two years was a challenge (if not a little crazy!), but now as the founder of Maitland Street Interiors, this journey into interiors continues to be enormously rewarding and inspiring.
Sarah’s love of design, to create and positively influence how we all inhabit our homes and spaces, started when she and her husband purchased their first family home in Maitland Street, Glen Iris (the inspiration behind the name Maitland Street Interiors). A single fronted Victorian era weatherboard home with loads of character, it was in desperate need of a makeover. Their home has evolved over the years as projects have been completed, transforming it into a family haven that truly reflects their style and way of living.
Sarah has immersed herself in the industry for the past two years to gain valuable experience in both Styling and Interior Design. Following a chance introduction to Julia Green from Greenhouse Interiors at a local Council business breakfast, Sarah has been working alongside the team as a casual styling assistant to Julia, Jacqui Moore and Noel Coughlan. Sarah's eye for styling and attention to detail has developed whilst assisting on editorial photo shoots for Home Beautiful, House and Garden, Real Living Magazine and Inside Out, as well as various product campaign photo shoots for Globe West, Eadie Lifestyle, Space to Create, Klaylife, Barefoot Gypsy, Barnaby Lane and Merci Perci. Assisting to create beautiful layered images, with Greenhouse Interiors signature use of colour, texture and layering, has had an enormous impact on Sarah’s design philosophy.
Taking inspiration from nature, fashion, art, culture and our way of living, Maitland Street Interiors delivers unified interiors with a focus on supporting Australian made or designed products that will last a lifetime. Layering a space with loads of texture, colour and personal curios to suit your style, our mission is to create an interior that – in the words of style icon Coco Chanel ‘is the natural projection of your soul’.
