Maitland Street Interiors was founded by Interior Decorator + Stylist Sarah Elshaug, who creates beautifully resolved spaces that inspire retreat-style living every day.
Sarah has combined her former career in marketing and events with her passion for beautiful interiors to create Maitland Street Interiors. After craving a more creative outlet beyond corporate life, Sarah found it studying Interior Decoration at RMIT before launching the studio in 2016. Her ambition has always been to create beautifully resolved spaces that bring retreat-style living into the home - directly influencing the way people feel, every day.
Since the launch of Maitland Street Interiors, Sarah has helped envision and create beautiful family homes, restaurants and business spaces that balance and capture her clients’ needs, preferences and aspirations.
Sarah’s love of design, to create and positively influence how we inhabit our homes and spaces, started when she and her husband purchased their first family home in Maitland Street, Glen Iris (the inspiration behind the name Maitland Street Interiors). A single fronted Victorian era weatherboard home with loads of character, it was in desperate need of a makeover. Their home has evolved over the years as projects have been completed, transforming it into a family haven that truly reflects their style and way of living.
Making the most of a chance meeting with Julia Green of Greenhouse Interiors whilst studying provided Sarah with valuable on-the-job styling experience to hone her own styling and design philosophy – one that draws on local designers and products, and creates layered spaces loaded with texture, colour and personal touches for each client.
Since then, styling collaborations have included assisting with editorial photo shoots for Home Beautiful, House and Garden, Real Living Magazine and Inside Out, as well as various product campaign photo shoots for interior brands such as Globe West, Eadie Lifestyle, Space to Create, Klaylife, Barefoot Gypsy, Barnaby Lane and Merci Peri.
Maitland Street Interiors projects have since been published in top interior magazines and blogs including The Design Files, Dot + Pop, Stylephiles, The Design Chaser, Delicious, Urban List, GT Home, Progress Leader, Mornington Peninsula Magazine, Green Magazine and Home Beautiful.
Sarah is also a regular contributor to Domain, sharing her tips and insights with readers on interior-related topics.
ELSIE + HUGO…
With creativity and getting immersed in nature as her two greatest passions, Sarah launched the photographic print range Elsie + Hugo. The range was created as a passion project, following an afternoon spent sitting in the paddock on her parents farm at Balnarring on the Mornington Peninsula, camera in hand photographing the cows as they grazed and played. The images were so natural and in the moment with stunning details of the cows captured up close, Sarah decided they needed to be shared. So with the support of some wonderful industry friends her limited edition photographic print range Elsie + Hugo was launched with a solo exhibition in Balnarring. The range is now available to purchase exclusively at The Block Shop.
THE RETREAT STYLIST…
Sarah’s most recent venture – The Retreat Stylist - provides interior styling advice for short-term rental owners on the Mornington Peninsula. Having grown up spending weekends on the family farm in the area, Sarah understands the moods, luxury and natural beauty of this coastal region. Today’s owners of short-term rentals are becoming increasingly aware that it is no longer enough to offer style savvy holiday makers a bed for the night, and Sarah loves the challenge of working with owners to create accommodation that offers instant coziness and personality, and creates the impulse to exhale as soon as you arrive.
Sarah’s local knowledge of the Mornington Peninsula and her passion for being immersed in nature, along with her branding and marketing expertise, provide clients with a unique end to end styling and branding solution to effortlessly create a successful retreat-style short-stay property that will capture the hearts of style savvy holiday makers.
The Retreat Stylist’s interior decoration packages provide property owners the ability to transform their short stay rental into retreat style accommodation, delivering increases in occupancy, rates and stylish appeal.
Living in Melbourne with her husband and two daughters, Sarah understands that interiors need to support and enhance family living, and in her words, the satisfaction comes with knowing that she’s helped to create a haven: “It’s that uplifting feeling you get when you open the door each day and step inside your own retreat-style sanctuary you always dreamed of - we love to see our clients living the dream. ”
Sarah believes in the importance of refreshing, recharging and reconnecting with family and friends. With the recent launch of The Retreat Stylist and Maitland Street Interiors, she loves creating beautifully resolved interiors that truly impact the way people inhabit and thrive in their spaces every day.
