Maitland Street Interiors was founded by Interior Decorator + Stylist Sarah Elshaug, who creates beautifully resolved spaces that bring retreat-style living into the home.
Sarah has melded a former career in marketing and events and her passion for beautiful interiors to create Maitland Street Interiors. After craving a more creative outlet beyond corporate life, Sarah found it studying Interior Decoration at RMIT before launching the studio in 2016. Her ambition has always been to create beautifully resolved spaces that bring retreat-style living into the home and directly influence the way people feel, every day.
Since the launch of MSI, Sarah has helped envision and create beautiful family homes, restaurants and business spaces that balance and capture her clients’ needs, preferences and aspirations.
Sarah’s love of design, to create and positively influence how we inhabit our homes and spaces, started when she and her husband purchased their first family home in Maitland Street, Glen Iris (the inspiration behind the name Maitland Street Interiors). A single fronted Victorian era weatherboard home with loads of character, it was in desperate need of a makeover. Their home has evolved over the years as projects have been completed, transforming it into a family haven that truly reflects their style and way of living.
Making the most of a chance meeting with Julia Green of Greenhouse Interiors several years ago has provided valuable on-the-job opportunities for Sarah to hone her own styling and design philosophy – one that draws on local designers and products, and creates layered spaces loaded with texture, colour and personal touches for each client.
Styling collaborations have included assisting with editorial photo shoots for Home Beautiful, House and Garden, Real Living Magazine and Inside Out, as well as various product campaign photo shoots for interior brands such as Globe West, Eadie Lifestyle, Space to Create, Klaylife, Barefoot Gypsy, Barnaby Lane and Merci Peri.
Sarah’s projects have been published in top interior magazines and blogs including The Design Files, Dot + Pop, Stylephiles, The Design Chaser, Delicious, Urban List, GT Home, Progress Leader, Mornington Peninsula Magazine, Green Magazine and Home Beautiful. Sarah is also a regular contributor to Domain, sharing her tips and insights with readers on interior-related topics.
Her most recent business venture – The Retreat Stylist - sees Sarah turning her attention to styling advice for short-term rental owners on the Mornington Peninsula. Having grown up spending weekends on the family farm in the area, Sarah understands the moods, luxury and natural beauty of this coastal region. Today’s owners of short-term rentals are becoming increasingly aware that it is no longer enough to offer style savvy holiday makers a bed for the night, and Sarah loves the challenge of working with owners to create accommodation that offers instant coziness and personality, and creates the impulse to exhale as soon as you arrive.
The Retreat Stylist’s interior decoration packages provide property owners the ability to effortlessly transform their short stay rental into retreat style accommodation, delivering increases in occupancy, rates and stylish appeal.
Living in Melbourne with her husband and two daughters, Sarah understands that interiors need to support and enhance family living, and in her words, the satisfaction comes with knowing that she’s helped to create a haven:“That uplifting feeling when you open the door each day and step inside the home you always dreamed of truly enjoying.”
Sarah believes in the importance of refreshing, recharging and reconnecting with family and friends. With the recent launch of The Retreat Stylist and Maitland Street Interiors, she loves creating beautifully resolved interiors that truly impact the way people inhabit and thrive in their spaces every day.
